Sensorial

The sensorial curriculum helps children refine their senses through specially designed materials.

Sensorial

The Sensorial area of the Montessori classroom contains materials that help children refine each of their senses. Through repeated interaction with these materials, children develop the ability to observe, compare, differentiate, reason, and problem-solve.

Sensorial activities focus on:

  • Visual discrimination — size, color, shape, and dimension
  • Tactile sense — texture, temperature, and weight
  • Auditory sense — distinguishing sounds and tones
  • Olfactory and gustatory senses — smell and taste exploration
  • Stereognostic sense — recognizing objects by touch alone

Dr. Montessori believed that sensory training provides the foundation for intellectual development. The sensorial materials are designed to isolate one quality at a time, helping children focus and refine their perceptions.
